Meet Tessa Delves, ICAN Learn Administrator & financial literacy graduate!

Tessa Delves

If you call ICAN Learn, chances are you’ll be speaking with Tessa Delves, Administration Worker extraordinaire and financial literacy graduate. We yarned with Tessa to find out how completing the skillset Financial Literacy Education (CHCSS00077) supercharged her skills and opened exciting new doors for her future studies.

Welcome to The Yarn Tessa!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’ve been working for ICAN Learn since January 2024 and am based in their head office in Bendigo, Victoria. I work full time and have three kids and a husband who take up the rest of my time!

Can you tell us what a typical day at ICAN Learn looks like for you?

I help with the day-to-day administration of our Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as enrolling students, compliance tasks, technical support, or getting creative in PowerPoint making presentations for our trainers to deliver in class.  I also take lots of enquiries from people all over Australia enquiring about our fantastic courses and scholarships and get to build relationships with current students if they’re reaching out for a bit of support.

ICAN Learn are big believers in continuous learning. What inspired you to complete the skillset in Financial Literacy Education (CHCSS00077)?

I’ve always wanted to further my education but never quite knew where to start. I have previously completed a few certificate and diploma qualifications (with an exhausting 5-year-old and teenagers at home, and a husband who works nights) so I knew I wasn’t ready for another long course.  So when ICAN Learn  offered me the amazing opportunity to complete the 3-day skillset with the full support of my workplace, I jumped at the chance. It was just what I needed to encourage my love of learning again.

What did you enjoy most about course?

The trainer was friendly, lively, and knowledgeable and kept the learning relevant and engaging. I typically struggle to stay focused in class, but this didn’t happen at all!  The PowerPoint presentation was so helpful in backing up the verbal discussions we had, and the group I was with were really engaged throughout.  It was amazing to hear everyone’s opinions and knowledge on the topics covered. I also learned so many practical ideas that I could use in my everyday life!

Did the content meet – or exceed – your expectations?

The content itself met my expectations,  but the friendly, encouraging trainer and my wonderful classmates helped to exceed the expectations I had for the course overall.  The course resources were clear, easy to understand, and are relevant for both your work and home life.

Was it a challenge balancing your work, study and homelife?

Not at all. As the FLE is only a short course, I was able to easily manage attending classes as well as completing the assessments at the end of the classes. Having the support of my workplace also meant that I was able to complete some of the assessments during my work time. Completing the skillset has inspired me to enrol in a longer course in the near future, such as the Certificate IV in Community Services, without causing a work/study/home life imbalance.

Have your new skills given you a better understanding of why people seek financial support?

Absolutely! Completing the skillset helped me understand the financial issues many people are facing, especially with the cost-of-living crisis, and has given me a better understanding of the work that financial capability and financial counsellors do. The sector definitely needs more of both.

Who do you think this course would be beneficial for, and why?

I think this course would be beneficial to anyone currently in, or wanting to get into, the community services sector or anyone that works with vulnerable people. It will also benefit individuals who just want to better understand their own finances and make positive changes in their own life or the lives of others around them.

It’s time for some work/life balance! It’s the weekend – where are we going to find you?

Definitely at an op shop looking for interesting things to buy, or adventuring somewhere with a camera, taking lots of photos, seeing a band, or hanging out with family.
