When Chrissie first began her Diploma of Financial Counselling with ICAN Learn, she carried with her a powerful motivation: to use her lived experience to help others facing financial stress. Like many students, the road wasn’t easy—Chrissie juggled family responsibilities, health challenges, and moments of self-doubt. Yet through resilience, determination, and the support of her trainers and peers, she pressed on and achieved her diploma.
What followed was life-changing. After months of preparation and persistence, Chrissie applied for a role in the city—even though the position asked for two years’ experience. “I just thought, I’ll give it my best shot,” she recalls. Nervous but honest in her interview, Chrissie spoke about her values and the practical experience she gained through placements and role plays. Two weeks later, she received the call: she had secured the role.
Now stepping into her new position as a financial counsellor, Chrissie is excited to combine her personal insights with professional training. “Keeping a roof over your head, working with renters and people facing homelessness—that’s something I understand deeply,” she explains. “This opportunity aligns with my values and gives me the chance to make a real difference.”
Looking back, Chrissie credits ICAN Learn not only for the skills she developed, but also for the community that sustained her. “There were so many times I wanted to quit, but the trainers and my classmates kept me going. That support made all the difference.”
Her message to anyone considering financial counselling? “Have a reason why, find your passion, and remind yourself of it every step of the way. The feeling at the end is incredible—you’ve done it, and you’re ready to change lives.”
Chrissie’s story is a powerful reminder of why ICAN Learn exists: to create pathways for people to transform their own lives while building a stronger financial counselling workforce for communities across Australia.
