3 Kids and a Career Change!

Ever had the feeling something wasn’t right for you? Ellen Cameron was studying financial planning, but her heart wasn’t in it.  Then she discovered Financial Counselling and a whole new career! Ellen took time out of her busy schedule this month to tell The Yarn how she changed her studies and changed her life.

I previously worked and studied financial planning; however, this role did not sit right with me and did not align with my expectations and values.

I decided to make a career change after completing my Bachelor of Commerce and began working in financial capability, which led me to financial counselling.  I’m so glad I made a career change – this role perfectly suits me!

Of course, there were challenges along the way, like finding the time to study for my Diploma of Financial Counselling CHC51122, work, and be a mum to 3 young children.  But the ICAN Learn team really supported me.  They understood the challenges of working, being a parent, and studying at the same time.  They were always there to help, listen, and encourage me towards the finish line.

As with anything, there are always ups and downs, but being consistent, allocating time, and working through it as best you can with the end goal in mind is so important.

I was lucky enough to move from Financial Capability Worker to a Financial Counselling role in the team I was working in, which meant I could work and study at the same time.  It was very beneficial for my learning.

Flexible delivery options

ICAN Learn was also flexible with its delivery options, and its hybrid course worked well for me.  The night classes suited my work schedule and kept me accountable and motivated, and the online portal was easy to navigate.  Having qualified trainers who work in the sector was incredible, and they were more than happy to share their knowledge and real-life experiences with us.

If you want to work in a space that combines helping others with a financial lens, then a financial counsellor or capability role is for you.  Seeing clients gain confidence and feel empowered to regain control of their financial situation is amazing and inspiring.

I recently graduated and felt relieved and proud of myself for pushing through.  My family was also very proud and helped me celebrate with a fantastic dinner!

For me, it is important to role model for my kids what working toward and actually achieving a goal looks like, to show them what they can do too.

Now that I’ve graduated, I feel confident in my role and plan to continue my education in this sector.

If anyone is in the same boat I was, thinking about a career change and interested in the financial wellbeing sector, I highly recommend taking the leap!

As told by Ellen Cameron.
